West Wickham & District Local History Club was founded in 1984 with the aims of fostering interest in and appreciation of the history of the local area.

The Club arranges a programme of talks and local visits; encourages and undertakes research on all aspects of local history; maintains a collection of books, articles and artefacts relevant to the local area; has an extensive collection of photographs, copies of which are available; organises occasional exhibitions and provides information and advice for those researching family or house history.

In 2013, the Club received a Heritage Lottery Fund All Our Stories grant for a community archaeology project to discover something about the medieval settlement of West Wickham. More than 100 people of all ages took part in excavating 18 test pits with support from Cambridge University’s Access to Archaeology and Cambridge Community Heritage staff. The Club aims to build on the enthusiasm generated by this project and do more archaeological work in the next few years so that we can add to the knowledge already gained and have an even better idea of how the village came to look as it does today.

The activities of the Club are open to all. Membership is £10 a year and visitors are welcome to all meetings for a small charge. More information can be found on the village website.
