The Cambridge Archaeology Field Group (CAFG)  will be on site at Wimpole Hall from 20th July to 28th July, 10.00 to 4.00pm excavating 1m square test pits. They hope to find evidence of the early Saxon settlement as well as later medieval activity. Please come along to see what they have found and talk to the archaeologists. This is a project funded by the Heritage Lottery as part of the Council for British Archaeology Festival of Archaeology. See their website for more information.

We had IMG 0528 - Copya good and useful time at our Advisory Group meeting on Tuesday. We'll be sending out more information about what was discussed over the next few days, but in the meantime, here's a photo!

The first meeting of the Advisory Group will be tomorrow, Tuesday 16th July at 7pm.

The Advisory Group is comprised of the Steering Committee (Stephen Macaulay, OAE; Quinton Carroll, CCC; Sally Croft, CCC; Jo Richards, Jigsaw; Jemima Woolverton, Jigsaw) and one member from every affiliated group or new Archaeology Action Group.

The Advisory Group meetings will:
* provide an opportunity for the Steering Committee to outline and explain the direction of Jigsaw
* allow group representatives to feedback on their experiences of the project so far
* discuss what groups require in the way of training and support

Depending on the success of the first meeting, the group will meet biannually. Each group can choose their representative: this could be a group leader or a group member, and it does not have to be the same person at every meeting, although this would be helpful for continuity.

We hope these meetings will allow the Steering Committee to explain the aims and objectives of Jigsaw to the Jigsaw Community, and provide a forum for the Jigsaw Community to contribute to decisions about the future activities of the project.

One ofIMG 0524 our volunteers, Rog, comes in most Tuesdays to help us with practical Jigsaw admin. Today he was creating some more 'washing line' tapes for magnetometry surveys (see picture). If you would like to volunteer with Jigsaw or Oxford Archaeology East, please fill in our volunteer form.

Opportunities include:

* Finds processing at Oxford Archaeology East (OAE)

* Excavating on commercial OAE sites, when suitable sites are available

* Practical admin help for Jigsaw and OAE Outreach teams at our Bar Hill office.

* Assistance at Outreach events.

Next Saturday 20th July from 10am-1pm we are running a course in Resistivity geophysics (P3) at Wicken Fen. Much to our surprise, we now have a free space on this course! Since demand for training in resistivity is so high in the Jigsaw Community, we wondered if someone would like to take it?

We also have a couple of free spaces on P4 Magnetometry from 2-5pm also next Saturday at Wicken Fen. You may only attend this course if you have already received Jigsaw training in resistivity. You must have good upper body strength, not have any metal in your body (e.g. pins, pacemaker) and have completely demagnetised clothing (i.e. no zips etc.) to participate.

More information and a booking form can be found here.
